Interactives / Graphics / Slideshows
- Valley Celebrates 'No Pants Day' - This slideshow, which was a combination of my photos and community-submitted photos, brought in more than 600,000 pageviews as of May 2010, making it responsible for about 10 percent of all slideshow pageviews at that time.
- Who's Who of Arpaio's Alleged Targets - The flash interactive, built using Vuvox, lists people who believe they've been targets of investigations by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio intended to intimidate them. The interactive combines photos, text, video and links to related stories.
- Pool School Safety Test - This interactive was designed to teach users about different "danger zones" around common swimming pools. When the user mouses over a danger zone, the area brightens and an infobox describing the issue appears. The infobox also contains a link to a short clip explaining the danger.
- Pest Hot Zones - As part of KPHO-TV's Verminator series during May 2009 sweeps, I created these two interactive maps to highlight hot zones for various pests in the Phoenix metro area.
- Logan McQueary's Route to Texas - A KPHO-TV reporter was the only one invited to follow the father of missing baby Gabriel Johnson, Logan McQueary, as he retraced Gabriel's mom's journey to Texas. The Google map includes photos taken on the route as well as links to related stories.
- Map of Police Pursuit - This map tracked police's pursuit of two suspects accused of shooting and killing Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler.
- Dominos on Wall Street - As part of my capstone course at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., I created a graphic that gives a basic explanation of the Wall Street activities behind the subprime collapse.
- The Path to Eviction - This slideshow illustrates the fictional Mr. Smith's journey as he purchases a home with a subprime mortgage until he is brought to court and evicted after refusing to leave his foreclosed home.
Special Sections / Verticals / Websites
- Baby Gabriel Johnson Case Archive - This section was designed to house all articles and video, as well as slideshows and other interactive elements, relating to the case of missing baby Gabriel Johnson. It includes an RSS feed of article headlines.
- Outbreaks & Illnesses - At the KPHO-TV News Director's request, I created this self-maintaining special section. The links to the outbreak map, influenza sections and interactives are all static and evergreen; however, the headlines come from an RSS feed I built using Yahoo! Pipes that aggregates stories from the World Health Organization, the USDA and the CDC. (I also used Yahoo! Pipes to build the feed that powers the News Across Arizona module on the Phoenix News page.)
- Sheriff Joe Arpaio Chronicles - After the station created the blog about Arpaio, I put together a section about the infamous sheriff. The microsite consists primarily of three parts: a blog; a news archive that keeps track of the most recent 15 headlines, most recent 10 videos and featured stories; and the Who's Who interactive. Since their inception, the blog and the interactive have brought in more than 50,000 pageviews.
- W&L Department of Journalism and Mass Communications - My university's journalism department hired me to redesign its website to make it more user-friendly and modern (an old news archive page still uses the old layout). The site's layout was built using only CSS.

Sample Newspaper Pages
- Rockbridge Report - Life Section - March 21, 2008 - I produced this example front page for a "Life" section as part of my copy editing class at W&L. The fact that I could include "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" as part of the Mary Poppins story's double headline makes me happy.
- Rockbridge Report - Front Page - March 7, 2008 - This is an earlier front page from the W&L copy editing class. I was just learning inDesign at this point, and though I'm pleased with some aspects of the page (such as the headlines and the shaded box article), I would definitely do some things differently if I had the chance to redo the page.
